    Off-duty deputy dies after being shot at Chicago gas station

    CHICAGO — An off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s deputy has died following a shooting and crash on the city’s South Side.

    The shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of East 67th Street in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

    Police said the 31-year-old deputy was at a gas station when he was approached by another man. The men started arguing, and the offender took out a handgun.

    The deputy also pulled out his gun and exchanged gunfire with the offender, who fled the scene on foot.

    According to police, the deputy was shot in the chest and attempted to drive his vehicle, but crashed into a pole in the 6700 block of South Indiana.

    He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

    No one is in custody. Area One Detectives are investigating.

    The Cook County Sheriff’s Department released the following statement Tuesday:

    An off-duty Deputy was killed in shooting incident early this morning in the 500 block of East 67th Street. Please contact the Chicago Police Department for information about the investigation of the incident. Sheriff’s Office staff are with the Deputy’s family as well as with the Sheriff’s Office team to provide support and resources as they navigate this senseless tragedy.
