A 16-year-old was arrested and an 18-year-old charged in connection with an April shooting at an after-prom party in Chillicothe, the Peoria County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday in a news release.

The 16-year-old was arrested without incident Wednesday in Peoria and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and not possessing a Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID), according to the release.

Korion B. Hopkins, 18, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and no FOID, according to the release. He was already being detained in the Peoria County Jail for previous weapons charges, police said.

Background: After-prom party shooting in Chillicothe may have had gang involvement, sheriff says

At approximately 12:55 a.m. April 28, the Peoria County Sheriff's Office responded to the Valley Lakes Center at 13929 N. Ivy Lake Road to a call on a large group fighting with shots fired. The facility had been hosting an after-prom party put on by students from several local schools with events the night before.

Deputies found a large group of people fleeing the parking lot and an 18-year-old male lying on the ground in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was found with a firearm in his waistband, according to police, later discovered to be stolen from Texas. The male was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim was in stable condition a week later, according to Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins.

“Through a long and thorough investigation with Peoria PD, our detectives identified both males as shooting the 18-year-old victim on April 28 at the Valley Lakes Center,” Watkins said in a statement.
