Unsheltered woman, 23, fatally shot in Chula Vista, police say

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities are investigating after a 23-year-old woman was fatally shot near C Street in Chula Vista Thursday night.

Officers with the Chula Vista Police Department were called to the 200 block of C Street just after 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, for reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers say they found woman with a gunshot wound who was bleeding heavily just off the road on C Street, west of the Woodland Hills Apartments. Officers began life-saving measures until medics arrived and took over, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

She is described by police as a 23-year-old woman, believed to be unsheltered and living in Chula Vista.

During the course of the investigation, Chula Vista Police learned the shooting may have happened in the field behind the Woodland Hills Apartments, north of C Street, an area where police say unhoused individuals are known to reside.

The police department reports the victim was with a man when they arrived at the scene, but police believe he is not the suspect and have no information on a possible suspect at this time. However, they did emphasize there does not appear to be an active threat to the public.
