On the campaign trail, vice presidential hopeful JD Vance has been stopping at local eateries, most recently at an A&W in Big Rapids, Michigan. Speaking with NBC News, Vance responded to one spontaneous stop that didn't quite go as planned: the now-viral donut shop video.

In the clip shared on social media last week, Vance , members of his team and Secret Service agents visited a bakery in Valdosta, Georgia. One employee asked not to be on camera while the Ohio senator tried to make small talk and buy donuts.

“I just felt terrible for that woman,” Vance told NBC in a story published Wednesday, referring to the bakery employee. “We walked in, and there’s 20 Secret Service agents and there’s 15 cameras, and she clearly had not been properly warned, and she was terrified, right? I just felt awful for her.”

Vance said his stops aren't "scripted events," referring to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' recent stop at a Pennsylvania Sheetz. But he did say he told his team that future visits need to be more carefully planned.

“I like to get out there and talk to people and we want to make sure we’re doing it, but definitely make sure that people are at least ok with being on camera, or we’re going to walk in and you’re going to have a person who has, practically, a panic attack because she’s got 15 cameras in her face," he said.

Vance's mother joining son on campaign

Vance's mother, Beverly Aikins, who lives in Middletown , joined him for his campaign event in Michigan on Tuesday.

“I just want everybody to know him like I know him,” Aikins told NBC. “He’s an amazing human being and he really, truly thinks he can make a difference.”

What JD Vance told Georgia governor Kemp

Vance also told the outlet he called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, possibly weighing in on the Republican's decision to publicly declare his support for the GOP ticket on Fox News .

Donald Trump later praised Kemp on social media, reconciling a years-long feud that Republicans had worried could impact votes in the swing state.
