After being one of the top pitchers in all of baseball in July, Hunter Greene is heading into August hotter than the Cincinnati summer temperatures. He's had elite stretches in his career to this point but the run Greene is on currently is the best thus far.

Over Greene's last four starts, all of which came in July, Greene managed a 0.33 ERA over 27 innings. He allowed a lone run in his July 11 start. Stretch that back one more game and his numbers are 0.57 ERA over 31 2/3 innings. He had a one-run performance in his final start of June.

Even if you look back two more games, that is to say from June 19 through July 28, Greene had one bad outing to balloon his ERA to 1.71 over 42 innings. He's allowed a total of eight runs over those seven games with six coming in that one start. Greene has a .809 WHIP in that time (0.658 WHIP if you exclude the one bad outing).

Over the last 30 days, Greene leads all of baseball with that 0.33 ERA (even ahead of Blake Snell 's 0.55 ERA including last night's No-Hitter).

There was one other stretch where Greene was among the best in baseball. As a rookie, from August 1 through October 3, 2022, Greene pitched 29 innings with an ERA of 0.62. His WHIP over that time was exemplary as well at just 0.690.

Oddly enough, the Reds' lineup didn't help Greene out in that stretch either. In those four scoreless outings, he left the game ahead in two and tied in two. The Reds lost both of those games in which he left a tie game. Just like this year where the Reds are 2-4 in Greene's scoreless outings.

If the Reds are going to go on a run for the playoffs, Greene is going to be one of the biggest reasons why. With only a handful of starts left in the season, Greene is set to finish strong as he did in 2022.

However, it's on the bullpen and the rest of the Reds lineup to give him a little support. At this point in the season, Greene has the fifth-best odds to secure the NL Cy Young . It would be an uphill battle for Greene to win the franchise's second Cy Young but if he can finish August as he did July, those odds could improve a bit.

The first-time All-Star has a bright future anchoring the Reds' rotation.
