As the Cincinnati Bengals prepare for the regular season, their backfield will look at bit different than it has in years past. While the Bengals have had a lot of success in recent years, they decided to part ways with running back Joe Mixon this offseason.

Mixon had an excellent career with the Bengals, but the franchise felt like it was time for a change at the position. Now, Cincinnati will be looking to find its next franchise back to replace Mixon.

As of now, the two likely featured backs for the Bengals will be Zack Moss and Chase Brown. Recently, Pro Football Network spoke about players who are poised to breakout this coming season. Making their list was Brown for the Bengals.

Here’s what they had to say .

“While Brown will face competition from free agent signing Zack Moss, he’s been running with Cincinnati’s first team at training camp practices.

Brown only touched the ball 58 times behind Joe Mixon in 2023 but was electric in his opportunities. In Week 13, he turned a screen pass into a 54-yard touchdown against the Colts; Brown hit 22.05 miles per hour, the NFL’s second-fastest time for a ball carrier last season.

Brown is a weapon as a receiver, but he’s not a scat back. He weighs 215 pounds and handled 328 carries in his final season at Illinois, managing 30+ touches in six of 12 games.”

Chase Brown is set up for success with the Bengals

As a second-year running back, Brown is a bit of an unknown for the Bengals, but they must have liked what they saw from him in order to move on from Mixon. Last season, Brown totaled 179 rushing yards on 44 carries for a solid 4.1 yards per carry average. In the passing game Brown was also a factor, as he totaled 14 receptions for 156 yards.

At Illinois, Brown was no stranger to carrying a heavy load at the running back position, and he might be asked to do the same in Cincinnati. While Moss is the veteran, he hasn’t done much in the league yet to think that Brown won’t have a chance to be the featured back.

As the Bengals hope to bounce back from a disappointing season in 2023, having a strong running game to balance out their dynamic passing attack will be important. As potentially the No. 1 back in Cincinnati and with the talent around him on offense, Brown is poised for a great season.
