Would you want to spend the night in an old house that's labeled as one of the most haunted houses in Missouri? When you hear the Beattie Mansion is over a century old, you might believe it could be haunted.

    History of the home

The Beattie Mansion sits on top of a hill in St. Joseph, Missouri. It was originally constructed for Armstrong and Eliza Beattie. In their day, it was a large home and they were well-known members of their community. Mr. Beattie was elected mayor in 1857 and elected four more times after that. He was also the city's first banker.

In 1878, Armstrong died from cholera. His wife passed away two years later. Since they had no heirs to their property, their home crossed over into several hands. It was sold to the Ladies Union Benevolent Association (LUBA) providing a place to live for the homeless and people down on their luck.

In 1895, the mansion was converted into a nursing home called the Memorial Home for the Aged. In 1995, LUBA moved the elderly because they needed to be in a more modern facility. It then became a facility for people with mental health problems or who were recovering addicts.

    Hauntings

I have read it was sold in 2004 to private owners who wanted to turn it into a bed and breakfast venue. I recently read that In 2005, the home was sold to Michael Burkart with a plan to turn it into a hotel. When it was under renovation, however, workers must have been spooked by something--they never returned. It seems it's hard to keep construction workers on the property.

You can read all the reviews on Facebook. One person wrote, "It's the full package." I take it to mean if you're going to go to the mansion hoping to experience something there, you can count on it happening several times. The truth is, we are skeptical until we aren't.

Visiting the mansion for your personal ghost hunt

There is a booking calendar online. For your personal investigative experience, one night for up to 5 guests is $400--you and four friends could easily split that cost. I was intrigued by reading you're welcome to bring your own mattress, cot, or sleeping bag. The mansion also has a Facebook page containing photos. The mansion's website does say: What to expect during your stay. This can include common experiences, sights, sounds and sensations. Are you up for that?

You're not to assume all hauntings or spirits are evil. It's been said that there's a lot of activity in the kitchen and there's something in the basement.
