SCRANTON – It took a dramatic, clutch performance from another championship team to keep Abington Heights from adding to its list of girls titles when the District 2 Track and Field Championships concluded May 14 at Memorial Stadium.

Abington Heights had already won Lackawanna Track Conference Division 1, Jordan Relays and Robert Spagna LTC Championship Meet titles and more during the season before being edged by Dallas 113½-110½ for first place in Class 3A when the Mountaineers used a come-from-behind effort on a career-best relay performance by senior Trinity Basara on the final leg of the last event of the day, the 1600 relay.

“We’ve been battling with Abington Heights for decades,” Dallas coach Ed Radzinski said.

The Mountaineers, who have posted seven straight unbeaten seasons in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1, were able to take down the 19-time LTC Division 1 champions this time.

“That’s a program where everybody knows about Abington,” Radzinski said.

Anna Pucilowski led Abington Heights, winning the 3200-meter run in 11:05.9 and finishing second in the 1600.

Abington Heights won the 3200 relay and finished second in both the 400 and 1600 relays.

Madison Zalewski was third in the javelin and tied for third in the high jump.

The Comets had three other third-place finishers.

Reese Morgan, Emma Horsley and Marygrace Sabatini were 3-4-5 in a highly competitive 800 that featured a meet record performance by Wyoming Area’s Ella McKernan.

Lilia Calvert, in the 200, and Tomara Seid, in the triple jump, were the other third-place finishers.

Maggie Coleman was fourth in the 200.

Tomara Seid added a fifth in the pole vault and sixth in the long jump while Kiana Seid was seventh in the triple jump.

Gianna Julian was fifth in the discus.

Julia Schuster, Amelia Gonzalez and Lily Scoblick finished 6-7-8 in the 300 hurdles.

Schuster added an eighth in the 100 hurdles while Calvert was eighth in the 100. Hailey Hirtz, in the 3200, and Sarah Canter, in the shot put, were also eighth.

Scranton Prep’s Peyton Fox won the shot put for the only 10 points by the Classics.

Abington Heights was eighth in the Class 3A boys standings in 42 points.

D.J. Rogers won the 400 and was part of a 1600 relay victory. He added a sixth in the 200.

The Comets were second in the 3200 relay.

John Farrell was fourth in the 300 hurdles, Sean Rooney was sixth in the 800, Brandon Lezinski was seventh in the shot put and Derek Williams was eighth in the javelin.

Scranton Prep was 15 th with 21 points.

Chino Gonzalez placed third in the shot put while Colin Comerford (3200), Shawn Rowell (high jump) and Anthony De Los Santos (discus) were fourth.

The Lackawanna Trail girls scored 18 points and were 15 th in Class 2A girls, getting all their points in the throws.

Ella Axtell was second in the shot put and seventh in the discus while Mackenzie Schirg was fourth in the shot put, seventh in the javelin and eighth in the discus.
