Power Lineup Unplugged By Power Failure In Concord Saturday
Nice crowd out at the Concord Pavilion tonight, waiting patiently for John Waite, Foreigner and Styx when – fffzzszzip – the power goes out. PG&E says 1,500 are afflicted out in that part of Concord-Clayton but we don’t know if they’re counting the concert goers – who were patiently returning to their cars for the ride home.

After a warning from state regulators, the Concord City Council this week reversed its decision to effectively block an affordable housing project, which councilmembers had said would concentrate too many low-income apartments in the city’s downtown core. Residents and four-legged friends in Alameda County have a reason to feel a tad more secure, as local officials have unveiled a new livestock housing area at the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin. Lafayette: Gas-Power Leaf Blower Ban Begins July 1
Beginning July 1, gas-power leaf blowers will not be permitted for use by residents or landscape professionals in the City of Lafayette. The move comes after a ban was adopted by the City Council in October 2023 which prohibits the use of gasoline powered leaf blowers in Lafayette. The city delayed implementation for nine months to allow sufficient time for residents and property managers to make the switch. The City’s all-volunteer Lafayette Environmental Task Force researched and recommended the ban since gas-powered leaf blowers emit hydrocarbons, particulates, toxins, and carcinogens into the air – contributing to air pollution and negative health effects for the user.

News Brief: Orinda Around Town – July 2024
On May 21, Orinda City Council voted to waive $823,810 of in-lieu parking fees assessed against The Station, a mixed-use development located at 25A Orinda Way. Since the project was approved, California passed Assembly Bill 2097, which eliminates the need for parking for developments within a half-mile of public transportation. Because this law applies to The Station, the developers could have resubmitted their plans, which would no longer be subject to the parking fees. Rather than further delaying the project, which has been in the works for over four years, the City Council approved waiving the fees upon the city staff’s recommendation.

Orinda Fire Safety Fair
During the second annual Wildfire Prevention and Safety Fair, held June 1, in Orinda’s Community Park, Orinda residents Rob Karmele and daughter Vivienn, spent time getting familiar with handheld emergency radios as Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers looked on. The radios, which operate in the Family Radio Service band and do not require a license, are an essential way for people to keep in touch and gain important information during an emergency, such as a wildfire. To learn more about how to acquire and use the emergency radios, contact Lamorinda CERT at https://lamorindacert.org.

School Board approves rental plan for high school’s Performing Arts Center/Alan Harvey Theater
The completion of the new Performing Arts Center (PAC), and the Alan Harvey Theater within it, in 2022 using Measure H1 Bond proceeds was the culmination of years of planning and construction by the school district. To allow wider community use of the space, PUSD has now developed a facilities use agreement to govern rental of the facility to outside groups for a base rental fee of $355 per hour, with a refundable security deposit of $1,000. (The district is using a new platform — “Facilitron” — to manage facilities rentals.) The School Board approved the agreement at its June 26 meeting.
