Extreme heat has killed up to 1,000 fish at Fremont lake, city says
The Bay Area's sweltering temperatures are blamed for a fish kill at a lake in Fremont.The city told ABC7 News that 500-1,000 fish have died in Central Park's Lake Elizabeth.VIDEO: How Alameda County Fair officials are protecting livestock during heat waveThe Alameda County Fair is staying open through Sunday amid triple-digit heat and taking precautions to help protect the 4-H and FFA animals.Crews began cleaning up the fish shortly after they were discovered Wednesday.Fremont officials say the recent heat is lowering oxygen levels in the water as well as the overall water level.The city is trying to raise the water level to help protect the surviving fish. A recent SmartAsset study found that half of the top ten most expensive places to buy a house in the United States in 2024 are in California. With a typical house sale price of more than $1.5 million in 2024, San Jose, which is in the heart of Silicon Valley, topped the list. Prices in the city increased by 12% from the previous year.

Despite the record temperatures that Bay Area residents have been sweltering in all week, the heat was not enough to keep Karl the Fog from making his nearly annual July 4th visit to at least partially obscure San Francisco's fireworks show.There had been predictions -- even from Karl's own X social media account -- that the fog would stay away amid the blistering heat wave. However, well before sundown, a misty bank of fog could be seen making its way towards the Golden Gate Bridge and under the span.But in the end, the fog made its presence known in a major way.Despite the somewhat obscured view for those on the ground, the show was far more visible than it has been in recent years. CHP rescues kitten stranded on the side of I-80 in Oakland
A kitten stranded on the side of the highway Friday night was rescued after a call to the California Highway Patrol. Around 8 p.m., the CHP said they got a call about a kitten being stranded on the side of Interstate 80, near the I-580 eastbound transition. CHP officer Bretz responded to the call and found the kitten scared and shaking near the highway. "Officer Bretz quickly and calmly rescued this adorable fur-ball from getting hit," the CHP said. "We're thankful to those that called this in and grateful for officer Bretz's quick action and kind heart."
