(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) posted an amusing open letter to Colorado Springs on its Facebook page on Wednesday, June 26.

    The subject? Fireworks.

July 4th is right around the corner, and CSFD took a moment to remind everyone that fireworks (including sparklers) are illegal for several good reasons including personal and fire safety. In a humorous tone CSFD acknowledged that people would think they are “party poopers” and generally un-American, but they still stressed the importance of the law.

“At the end of the day,” CSFD posted. “We would rather you have all of your toes and fingers and refrain from starting a fire in our very fire-prone city.”

Fires start and grow very quickly in Southern Colorado and the “no fireworks” rule is in place to keep Colorado neighbors safe from this very serious threat.

CSFD said there are many professional fireworks shows around the city that are permitted and approved by the CSFD Division of the Fire Marshal. They encouraged anyone who currently has fireworks at home to help out CSFD by bringing them to the nearest fire station.

They also mentioned another good reason to leave fireworks to the professionals: the sounds of neighborhood fireworks can be distressing to animals and people who struggle with PTSD.

“So,” CSFD added. “Tonight when you go to bed dreaming about your 4th of July plans, don’t forget about the law, the scared puppies, and the men and women who have served our country who may be sensitive to those sounds.”
