This south Columbia sidewalk project could affect traffic through late fall

Those traveling on Grindstone Parkway will soon experience some traffic delays for sidewalk construction.

Work starts Sept. 10 by B&P Patterson LLC on the sidewalk project, which will include lane restrictions and shoulder closures. The project will address the sidewalk gap on the south side of Grindstone Parkway between Hyde Park Avenue and Norfleet Drive, thus impacting eastbound traffic, Columbia Public Works said.

Work will close the shoulder and bike lane on Grindstone parkway. Lane restrictions may also be necessary on Hyde Park Avenue and Norfleet Drive. Motorists are urged drive cautiously and reduce their speed in the work zone.

New sidewalks will be poured to fill the gap between Hyde Park Avenue and the intersection of Grindstone and State Farm parkways and from the intersection to Norfleet Drive. All are five-foot sidewalks with a three-foot greenspace buffer between it and the roadway. Removal and reconstruction of Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk ramps will be done at the State Farm/Grindstone intersection.

Total project cost is $139,200 paid through the city's capital improvement sales tax. Work is expected to happen through the late fall, Public Works said.

NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect that work starts Sept. 10 rather than Sept. 3 as originally reported.
