Ohio State, Oregon, LSU, Georgia, and Alabama lead in most important measure of college football team talent

When it comes to recruiting team rankings in July, the total number of recruits isn't always the best indicator of class strength. While it's nice that Rutgers has nearly 30 recruits already only five of them are blue chips (four stars or more). What means more is the average rating per commit for each class. But it's not just about having the nicest class on paper in the end either. No, it's much more.

According to Steve Wiltfong of On3, average rating per recruit is the single most important metric in predicting future college football success for programs. In fact, multiple studies (my own included) confirm that average recruiting ranking by itself accounts for over 50% of the variance in win totals for power conference teams in the College Football Playoff Era. So, which schools are on the best pace thus far with their average rating per commit?

    Average Rating Per Recruiting Commit

On3 Recruiting does a great job breaking down and updating the best recruiting classes by average rating per commit. Just today they announced the current leaders and the results were not that surprising (as you can see in the post below).

Since this post was shared Alabama added another five star, leap-frogging Florida State to move into the top five schools with Ohio State, Oregon, LSU, and Georgia. Ohio State is putting together a truly historic class, already snagging 23 total recruits, 18 of which are blue chip players. But Alabama took the lead for most five stars today as they just signed both Caleb Cunningham (wide receiver) and Ty Haywood (offensive tackle) this weekend .

LSU and Georgia aren't really surprise programs atop this list either, both having averaged top 5-10 recruiting classes for over a decade. However, Brian Kelly finding this much success in recruiting may surprise some given the negative noise surrounding LSU earlier this year when it came to the idea of "buying players" in the age of NIL .

The real surprise program near the top so far this recruiting cycle has been Oregon. Dan Lanning is building a monster of a program in Eugene, Oregon and he's not slowing down. The Ducks added five star wide receiver Dakorien Moore on July 4th and have solidified themselves as a fringe blue blood program now. They just have to put all their recruiting wins together and make it translate at the highest levels on the field.

All of the top programs in terms of average rating per commit will continue to fluctuate and change as National Signing Day approaches, but for now a bunch of blue blood programs and the Oregon Ducks are dominating the competition.
