Montana State Bobcats secured a solid 31-7 win over Utah Tech on Saturday. However, senior quarterback Tommy Mellott left the field with an injury, marking a concerning turn in the game. As the Bobcats continue their season, fans are eager to know exactly what happened to Mellott and when their star quarterback might return to the field.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tommy Mellott’s injury from the recent game.

How did Tommy Mellott get injured while playing football?

Montana State Bobcats quarterback Tommy Mellott was forced to leave the field due to an injury. Mellott, who had just scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, suddenly went down and needed help to leave the field. Initially, the injury was feared to be more serious. However, head coach Brent Vigen later confirmed that Mellott was suffering from severe cramps in both legs.

Brent Vigen said, “He was cramped in both calves. Tommy got out and ran a couple of times. I know we tried to limit him for this first stretch of the season, but again, the (Utah Tech) defense was dictating the read, so he kept the ball in his hands” (via Skyline Sports)

Despite the setback, Mellott delivered an impressive performance. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. Coach Vigen noted that the team had aimed to limit Mellott’s rushing attempts this season. However, the Utah Tech defense dictated otherwise. This led to Mellott’s increased workload and ultimately his injury.

When will Tommy Mellott return to play with the Montana State Bobcats?

As of now, there’s no official word on when Tommy Mellott will return to the field for the Montana State Bobcats.

Head coach Brent Vigen is preparing the team for various quarterback options. These include transfers like Iowa’s Deacon Hill and Syracuse’s Luke McPhail, as well as Reggie Graff. This preparation follows what Vigen described as an “uneven performance” by the offense in recent games.
