Recently, Travis Kelce talked about a key event early in his career: he was suspended from the University of Cincinnati. Fans are now eager to learn more about why Kelce was suspended and how it affected his future with the Dallas Cowboys.

Here is everything to know about why Travis Kelce was suspended and his interview with the Dallas Cowboys.

Travis Kelce was suspended for a year from Dallas Cowboys

As the NFL combine gets underway, Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce have taken to social media to reminisce about their early days in football. Kelce shared a nostalgic look back at his aspirations. He revealed how he once dreamed of following in the footsteps of Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten. However, Kelce’s path to the NFL was spoiled by a significant setback. This came in the form of a year-long suspension from the University of Cincinnati in 2010 due to a positive marijuana test.

During the 2013 NFL combine, the Cowboys expressed concern over this suspension during their interview with Kelce. Despite his attempts to address these concerns, the meeting didn’t go well. In an episode of the New Heights podcast, Travis Kelce candidly discussed how the Cowboys’ interviewers fixated on his suspension. This led to a tense and brief encounter.

Kelce said, “I basically just said, ‘If you guys think I’m gonna be that kind of guy, or you’re questioning if I’m still that person after everything that I’ve battled through to get to where I am now from missing a season, then you guys (should) probably go somewhere else and pick somebody else.’ And that’s exactly what they did.” (via Athlon Sports)

The Cowboys, then, ultimately decided against drafting Kelce. Instead, they chose San Diego State’s Gavin Escobar in the second round. However, the Kansas City Chiefs saw potential in Kelce. They selected him with the 63rd overall pick in the third round.
