Coastal Carolina Football: 2024 Chanticleers Season Preview and Prediction

Tim Beck’s tenure with Coastal Carolina started slowly but picked up some momentum along the way. Without former quarterback Grayson McCall and just about all the other names that made Coastal an occasional national headline over the last few years, it’s time for Beck and his staff to try and blaze their own trail on the teal field. If they can develop this young team enough for the program to reach a fifth straight bowl game, it will be an achievement.
Coastal Carolina 2024 Season Preview and Prediction
Previewing Coastal Carolina's Offense for 2024
If there’s a word to describe Coastal Carolina football’s 2023 season, it’s probably “streaky.” The Chanticleers opened with a loss at UCLA, then won two, lost two, won five, and then lost two before ending on a high note in the Hawaii Bowl. Each of their eight wins came when they scored at least 24 points. All in all, they’ll need to finish more drives after scoring touchdowns on 26 of their 54 trips to the red zone
Kansas transfer quarterback Ethan Vasko got more chances to play as the season went on, throwing seven touchdown passes and just one interception in his final four appearances of the season. He’ll be pushed for the starting job by Michigan State transfer Noah Kim, but Vasko proved to be efficient at running head coach Tim Beck’s takes on RPO concepts.
Coastal Carolina also returns leading rusher Braydon Bennett, who had 407 yards last season with five touchdowns. The Chants will need new blood to step up at receiver with the highest returning yardage total belonging to Jameson Tucker (423).
Coastal will have to replace its three leading tacklers from last year’s campaign. Safety Juan Powell is the leading returning tackler with 55. In particular, they’ll need to find new names who can help bolster the defensive front.
The unit was something of a “bend don’t break” group last season, allowing 416 yards but only 23.8 points per game. They proved to be better at defending the pass than the run. The Chants picked off 14 passes, second-most in the league. Matthew McDoom returns in the secondary after breaking up 10 passes (four in the bowl game) and earning All-Sun Belt honorable mention honors.
Previewing Coastal Carolina's Specialists for 2024
Placekickers Kade Hensley and Liam Gray split duties last season, and both were perfect on extra points, going a combined 43-for-43. The Chants will look for a new punter after Evan Crenshaw transferred. Ja’Vin Simpkins was the primary return man last season, but the Chants also still have McDoom, who had those duties as a freshman in 2022.
