San Diego County to pay nearly $15M to family of pregnant woman who died in jail 5 years ago
San Diego County will pay nearly $15 million to settle a lawsuit by the family of a 24-year-old pregnant woman who died in jail after a sheriff's deputy and a medical worker watched her collapse in a cell five years ago.The settlement reached Friday night after lengthy negotiations between the county and relatives of Elisa Serna came just weeks before the case was set to go to trial. The deal was confirmed by the judge overseeing the federal lawsuit, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday. “The dollar amount doesn’t matter,” said Elisa's mother, Paloma Serna, who plans to continue...
Restaurant surcharges to stay in California after last minute reversal by Gov. Newsom
Turns out, surcharges are staying in California restaurants. Late Saturday night, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed emergency legislation that exempts restaurants from a new law set to take effect on July 1. The legislation, passed in 2023, was aimed at eliminating so-called "junk fees." The latest legislation signed by the...
The Coronado Tasting Room ... One Of The Best Kept Secrets In Town
Perhaps one of the best-kept secrets in town is The Coronado Tasting Room, located at the Ferry Landing. The business, in the former location of the Art and Wildlife store, was opened by residents Colleen and Jay Cavalieri in February 2021, after they closed their Vom Foss Hillcrest location in 2020, when that lease expired.
The future of the Ocean Beach Pier | A look at the cost and the timeline to rebuild the battered OB Pier
SAN DIEGO — At the end of Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, a locked chain link fence marks the entrance to the iconic Ocean Beach Pier. The pier, often considered the center of Ocean Beach, now sits in disrepair, with planks missing from the deck and weakened pylons left to be battered by the incoming surf. Over several years, the city has poured millions of dollars to repair damaged sections. Last year, the city decided to close it for good.
Coronado Prepares To Celebrate The Fourth: The Making Of The 75th Anniversary Coronado Parade Movie
As a Coronado native and from a Navy family, I love and appreciate our town’s history and current vibe for locals and visitors alike. As a junior at Coronado High School, I had my first TV show on our cable station and co-emceed several parades and community events along the way of my 30+ years of television career. And, of course, I’ve been in it for reunions and enjoyed it as a spectator, too. So, I was honored when the Coronado Fourth of July Board of Directors asked me to help with a video commemorating one of our town’s most iconic events, the Coronado 4th of July Parade. I produced the 50th Anniversary of the Concerts in the Park video in 2022, so this would be another meaningful hometown project!

Announcing Candidacy For Coronado City Council
I am excited to announce my intent to run for Coronado City Council. I have had the good fortune of living in Coronado for over 25 years and some of my greatest joys and accomplishments have been from my involvement in this amazing community. I have had the privilege to serve in various capacities, and the more I volunteer, the more my desire to get involved grows. I have formed wonderful memories and have learned many lessons as Commodore of the Coronado Yacht Club, serving on the Board of the Rotary Club of Coronado, and currently serving as chair on the Coronado Historic Resource Commission. My hope in running for City Council is to further serve the community of Coronado and do my part in keeping our community great. I hope to be a familiar face that the community feels comfortable voicing concerns, giving suggestions and feedback to, and feels confident that I will truly consider everyone’s comments. I want to be a true liaison and advocate for the people.
