Police shot man who left guns, 'concerning' notes in car at Cranberry golf course

Police fatally shot an Ellwood City man near a Cranberry Township golf course Tuesday after guns and “concerning” notes were found in a vehicle he abandoned, prompting an hourslong search and shelter-in-place order issued in the township.

In a news release Wednesday, state troopers identified the man killed as Logan Cumberland, 37.

Township police Chief Kevin Meyer said at a news conference Tuesday that Cranberry Highlands Golf Course employees noticed a disabled vehicle shortly before 10 a.m. on a private road on golf course property. Meyer said Cumberland told them he was having car issues. Cumberland was not speaking coherently, Meyer said.

There were weapons inside the vehicle, police said. When officers arrived, the vehicle, a rental car, was vacant and Cumberland was missing. Cumberland was armed with a rifle, state police said.

“Additionally, they found some notes inside the vehicle that were extremely concerning to the officers, indicating that this person was not mentally stable and possibly wanting to do harm to either himself or others,” Meyer said.

The notes referenced UPMC in some way, Meyer said.

Police shut down and evacuated the golf course, he said. Numerous agencies searched the area, which prompted a townshipwide shelter-in-place order. At 3:10 p.m., Cumberland was located along Freshcorn Road, Meyer said.

Officers confronted Cumberland and fatally shot him, state police said. No officers were injured.

“Our investigators are still looking into this,” Meyer said. “We have Pennsylvania State Police who are going to be assisting us with the investigation, so those details have not come out yet. Further information will be forthcoming.”

State police and the Butler County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
