The summer basketball jamborees are an opportunity for Jake Wohlfeil, South Granville’s basketball coach, to evaluate the progress of his team.

For returning players it is a chance to hone their skills and leadership ability.

For new or junior varsity players it’s an opportunity to showcase their talents and possibly earn a starting position on the varsity program.

South Granville’s last home jamboree pitted the Athens Drive Jaguars against the Vikings.

South Granville turned to its more experienced players early in the first quarter. Mason Brown had the opening bucket off of a pass from KJ Terry. Brown and Terry each picked up a quick basket as the Jaguars tired to make adjustment to offset the Vikings size.

The Vikings defense created a turnover that opened up a space for Chris Bess to launch a 3-pointer to give South Granville a six point lead.

Terry closed out the half with two free throws and followed with a basket for an eight-point advantage at 13-5.

Terry continued to get the ball to Mason in the post for easy layups. Traevon Hayes broke into the scoring column in the second quarter with an old-fashioned 3-point play.

The Jaguars outscored South Granville by two points in the second quarter, but the Vikings maintained the lead at 19-13.

The pace quickened in the third quarter with Hayes making the first basket.

Brown followed with a smooth move on the inside for two points. He then stepped out beyond the arc and drilled a 3-pointer to give the Vikings an eight-point lead at 28-20.

Terry drove to the basket and scored for the Vikings, but Athens Drive would not stop hustling.

The Jaguars trimmed the lead to two points midway through the third quarter.

Bess and Terry made big baskets for the Vikings to push the lead back to five points at the end of the third frame.

The Vikings went back to the inside game with Mason going hard to the hoop. Hayes followed with a drive for two points.

Terry showed his range with a pair of 3-point baskets. Mason sealed the game with a strong move to the goal for a basket.

Unofficially, the Vikings claimed a six-point win over the Jaguars with a final score of 50-44.
