Colorado Ave. Safeway to be impacted by grocery chain merger
Apotential merger between grocery chains Kroger and Albertsons could impact 91 Safeway stores in Colorado, including the Westside’s Safeway on W. Colorado Avenue. As part of the merger, Albertsons will sell 91 Safeway stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, operator of the Piggly Wiggly chain. C&S has agreed that “no stores will close as a result of the merger.”

Owl rescued from tangled string in tree
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers rescued an owl from a tree in Colorado Springs on Tuesday. CPW officers Travis Sauder and Deme McDowell responded to a call reporting a Great horned owl stuck in a tree. When the officers arrived at the scene they found an own tangled in string dangling upside down in the tree, according to an X post from CPW. CPW officers couldn't reach the owl but noticed Chase Hubert with Front Range Arborists trimming trees nearby and asked him for help. Hubert climbed the tree and cut the owl loose. Phantom Canyon Brewing Company to host 'Hot Wing Games'
Test your tolerance for spice and compete for prizes at the Phantom Canyon Hot Wings Games. The event will take place on July 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Phantom Canyon Brewing Company. The contest is open to anyone 18 years or older. Contestants will have ten minutes to eat five wings with no drinks, no dipping sauce, no gloves, and no bathroom breaks. But soon they’ll be calling all the way from Glasgow, Scotland, where 20 pipers and 10 drummers from the Pikes Peak Highlanders Pipes and Drums will compete for the first time at the annual World Pipe Band Championships on Aug. 17. They’ll also compete Aug. 10 at the Abernathy Highland Games in Abernathy, Scotland, and Aug. 11 at the Perth Highland Games and the European Pipe Band Championships in Perth, Scotland.

Pioneers Museum’s “50% of the Story” is worth a look
The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum recently debuted an interesting exhibit titled “50% of the Story: Women Expressing Creativity.” It’s an ambitious undertaking, especially when it’s situated in one of the medium-sized main floor galleries. Paintings, photographs, prints and woven art are hung salon-style on the walls, so many that the eye is overwhelmed.
Opinion: A couple of must-do summer hikes
Most hiking trails in the Pikes Peak region are available all year-round. You will likely need different kinds of equipment in the winter — think heavier clothing, snowshoes or cross-country skis — than in the summer, where shorts, T-shirt and hiking boots will probably suffice.
