(CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo.) — FOX21’s Weekend Anchor Austin Sack, Photojournalist Sean Scott and one adorable donkey teamed up on Saturday morning, June 29 to take third place in the 93rd Cripple Creek Donkey Derby Days.

The donkey, who was given the name ‘Foxy’ by her teammates, gave her all in this morning’s race alongside Austin and Sean. What they lacked in speed, they made up with sheer determination, battling the heat and altitude to cross the finish line in style.

Donkey Derby Days goes from Friday, June 28, to Sunday, June 30 in Cripple Creek. Festivities includes a pancake breakfast, live music, and a parade featuring the Fort Carson 4th Infantry Division Color Guard and Band, the Al Kaly Shriners, and more. And of course, there are the races.

“It goes back to the mining donkeys that were released a long time ago,” said Race Leader, Dale McKenzie, when asked about the race’s history. “[The donkeys] would basically go blind. And Teddy Roosevelt came up here and wanted them to be released because he was a humanitarian.”

Roosevelt accomplished this, and in 1931 the donkeys were released to roam free in Cripple Creek during the summer, while townspeople care for them and give them winter pasture during the cold months. Soon after they were released, Donkey Derby Days became a yearly festivity.

Some of the donkeys do find permanent homes. “We pet some of the ones down there that were available for adoption, so we’re considering it,” said a bystander. “There’s some cuties.”

In the winner’s circle after the race Austin, Sean, and Foxy were handed two trophies to commemorate their 3rd place win. They received an official third place trophy, plus a second trophy to remind them that they came in “Dead Ass Last” in the race.

Despite the fact that the race had only three teams participating, Austin and Sean said they feel proud of their third-place finish and said that every team today was a winner. Foxy was not so sure.
