Closing Thoughts from VISD Superintendent Quintin Shepherd

In a world where education continually evolves, it’s crucial for our schools not just to keep pace but to lead the way in innovation and effectiveness. This is the purpose behind the Learning Lab hosted by the Victoria Independent School District this week. A learning lab is a quarterly event held around the state that embodies our commitment to fostering a System of Great Schools (SGS).

On February 28th, VISD welcomed district leaders from across the SGS Network to a day filled with learning, sharing, and strategic planning. Our Learning Lab, themed around "Sustainable and Effective Central Office Functions," aimed to highlight the importance of building strong, cross-departmental structures to support our schools' long-term success. We shared some of the bedrock principles that have helped us to build a robust system around innovation in our schools and throughout our district.

Participants started their day at the PLC @ FW Gross (PLC stands for Professional Learning Community), enjoying breakfast and an orientation about VISD before embarking on visits to Smith STEM Academy and STEM Middle School. These visits showcased our district's strides in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) implementation, a critical area for preparing our students for the challenges of tomorrow.

The day also featured a unique design challenge for the participants led by students from Smith STEM and STEM MS, providing an engaging, hands-on learning experience for all attendees. This not only highlights the creativity and innovation of our students but also offers a glimpse into the kind of problem-solving and critical thinking skills we aim to nurture in all our learners.

Following the lunch break, in which we squeezed in a thought leadership presentation and a panel discussion, the Learning Lab continued with professional learning strands led by SGS personnel, designed to deepen participants' understanding and skills in implementing system-wide educational strategies.

Our Learning Lab is more than just an event; it's a testament to our belief in the power of collaboration, innovation, and strategic planning to create a thriving educational ecosystem. It is also an honor to be considered a leader in the state. By bringing together district leaders from around Texas to share best practices and challenges, we are not just envisioning the future of education in VISD; we are actively building it throughout this great state.

As we reflect on this exciting event, we invite our community to stay informed through our regular updates in our monthly administration report and to join us in supporting and celebrating the ongoing journey of learning and improvement in our schools. Together, we can ensure that every student in the Victoria Independent School District has the opportunity to succeed, thrive, and lead in an ever-changing world!
