“This program helps students take what they’re studying and apply it in a real-life setting,” said City of Victoria Training and Development Specialist Sarah Parsons. “UHV has been a great partner in providing this opportunity that is so beneficial to us and to their students.”

On May 17, the interns gave presentations about what they learned to their supervisors, City of Victoria executive staff and UHV leadership.

Riley Rivera, who is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in political science with a pre-law concentration, interned with the Victoria Public Library and the City of Victoria Municipal Court as she explored how to help individuals navigate legal proceedings. She researched and developed flyers featuring a comprehensive list of locally available legal resources, which will be provided at the library and the Municipal Court, and she shadowed City staff during Municipal Court dockets, which allowed her to learn more about the justice system, including the rights of a person accused of a crime.
