How do you walk 10+ dogs at one time? Just recruit the Cuero Gobblers!

No PAOC dog gets more excited than they do on Thursdays once school is back in session. All the PAOC canines know the sound of the big Cuero ISD bus as it pulls into the shelter’s parking lot.

If dogs could talk they would be saying “Yippee - the Gobblers are back to walk, play and shower us with attention.”

Volunteers walking and spending time with shelter dogs helps socialize them and make them more adoptable.

It is now a five-year tradition for the various squads to plan their weekly class called Character Development with all the canines and felines at the pet rescue.

Coach Arroyo admitted that when the students can “choose up” the most popular non profit they like to visit is Pet Adoptions of Cuero. Coach Valchar and Coach Saenz brought along the Freshman and JV Gobbler teams this week so it was a first time visit for many on those squads.

The students also chimed in about why they enjoy the visit. Hunter Bias looks forward to seeing the new litters of puppies and student Dayton Barefield likes interacting with the dogs who are so friendly and anxious for human attention.

The shelter is thrilled that Cuero ISD has this program to instill volunteerism in the students and also bring out a busload of possible future adopters. As has happened in the past – some of the athletes bond with a particular homeless canine during their weekly visit. This results in a permanent pet adoption when the parents return to make it official. Another benefit also is that this introduction to the pet shelter brings many students back to fulfill their National Honor Society volunteer hours.

The PAOC staff and crew welcome the athletes who show they not only know how to WIN on the field but also in the hearts of dozens and dozens of orphaned canines and felines. There’s nothing MEAN GREEN about the extra attention PAOC pets will be getting every week from our Gobbler teams!
