    🕘Happy Throwback Thursday,

As we look back in time at some noteworthy milestones, let's keep an eye on the tragedy unfolding in Brazil today .

May 16 marks the birthdays of Janet Jackson (1966), Pierce Brosnan (1953), Liberace (1919) and Henry Fonda (1905).

Born May 17 in 1866: French composer Erik Satie , known for his experiments with tonality, spare compositions, unconventional ideas and often ironic sensibilities, in Honfleur, France. You've no doubt heard his "Trois Gymnopédies" in films and on TV. Learn more about the music of this eccentric genius.

Marmadukes Lodge celebrates its grand opening at 7 p.m. this Friday. The venue comprises a pizza parlor serving stone-fired pizza and milkshakes, a speakeasy bar and a restaurant that serves elevated sports pub fare.

Its name that pays tribute to Leesburg pioneers John and Mary Marmaduke Robertson (not the lovable cartoon dog) and photos of the Civil War-era couple on display, Marmadukes Lodge has a Prohibition Era-style nostalgic ambiance and features live music in the main room downstairs next to the bar’s brew barrels. A “high-end speakeasy” at the old Burns Drugs can be accessed with a secret tunnel of sorts and features piped-in jazz from the 1920s. Marmadukes is at 215 W. Main St., Leesburg. On May 15, 1871, a post office opened off the shore of south Lake Griffin, now the site of Bourlay Historic Nature Park . Later it opened in the lovely art nouveau building where Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce now stands.

On May 16, 1929, a swimming pool opened in Venetian Gardens. Richard Forester, from a fourth generation Dutch family of landscape architects, designed the park. The family was responsible for showplaces in Europe, including the French Riviera. Forester had previously designed Ravine Gardens in Palatka, another WPA project.

Leesburg's city pool in Venetian Gardens was originally segregated . A newer pool opened in 2022 in a historically Black neighborhood.
