Alamo Drafthouse's North Texas theaters will reopen this summer

Alamo Drafthouse is planning a comeback in North Texas after five of its locations in the region closed abruptly last month.

Why it matters: Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema — the first time in 75 years that a major Hollywood studio will own a movie theater company.

    • The shuttered Alamo theaters will reopen in "rapid succession" this summer, the Austin-based chain recently announced .

The big picture: Alamo has dozens of theaters across the country and offers high-end amenities with its movies.

State of play: An Alamo franchisee's bankruptcy filing triggered last month's closures in Denton, Dallas' Cedars neighborhood, Lake Highlands, Las Colinas, Richardson and the Twin Cities area of Minnesota.

    • Sony Pictures Entertainment has created a division to manage its newly acquired Alamo portfolio.
    • Alamo will stay in Austin and operate all of its 41 theaters.
    • Patrons owed refunds from the sudden closings will receive ticket vouchers, and Alamo Drafthouse Season Pass holders will receive a free month of the service.

Zoom in: A GoFundMe page started by a former Alamo manager says employees were let go without proper notice. The page had raised nearly $9,000 for the chain's Denton employees as of Monday morning.

    • All affected staff will be paid for overdue wages and former employees will receive first access to interviews for open positions, Alamo says.
    • Rehired employees will receive a more robust benefits plan, including access to daily pay, 401(k) match, paid medical leave, accrued PTO and free mental health services.
