A Davenport man was arrested early yesterday after police say he tried to ram a police cruiser while evading them.

According to court documents, police saw a GMC SUV driving eastbound on Locust Street at a high rate of speed on Sunday, June 30 at about 3:53 a.m. An officer turned on lights and sirens after seeing the SUV fail to stop at two stop signs. The SUV’s driver continued to elude police by speeding in excess of 25 miles per hour, making unsafe turns and failing to obey traffic devices.

The pursuit ended on Grand Avenue when the SUV tried to ram through a Davenport Police cruiser with its lights and siren activated and an officer inside. The SUV became disabled, and the driver tried to flee on foot. The passenger avoided being arrested and has not been identified. The driver was apprehended after a Taser deployment and identified as Charles A. Wilson, 20 of Davenport. He told police he fled because he was scared. Records show Wilson was barred from driving and was convicted of eluding in Scott County in 2017 and 2022.
