GAITHERSBURG, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Though slightly later than scheduled , the Montgomery County Fair has opened its gates for its 75th anniversary.

Crowds packed the fairgrounds Saturday after the remnants of Hurricane Debby washed out Friday’s opening day .

“We’ve been looking at the phone like we hope it’s not going to rain,” said Rachel Ledbetter, who brought her young son to the fair. “And then God blessed us with a beautiful day.”

Ledbetter drove all the way from her home in Alexandria, Va., to take in the fun.

“Montgomery County has one of the best fairs,” said Ledbetter. “And, I mean, I can’t wait to get to the animals and the carnival.”

Plenty of sunshine welcomed visitors to the fair’s first day. It was hard to find anyone who complained about the decision to cancel Friday’s activities.

“They thought about the people and opened when the rain is gone,” said Cecil Ward of Rockville, Md.

The Montgomery County Fair runs through Saturday, Aug. 17.
