HAYMARKET, Va. (DC News Now) The Battlefield Bulldogs have not lost a single regular-season football game in three years.

One thing they’re still looking for is a state championship title – something they’re determined to get their hands on this year.

The team came close last season but lost in state 6B regional final to the eventual state champions, Freedom-Woodbridge. Battlefield won their last state title back in 2010.

Head coach Greg Hatfield is entering his fourth season with the Bobcats. The program has gone undefeated under Hatfield during three regular seasons and has just three losses, each coming in postseason play. He sees the determination in his squad to make sure they’re on top.

“We don’t really concentrate on our opponents, as silly as that seems,” said Hatfield. “We really focus on ourselves… focus on the wrong things and you can get knocked off track.”

It’s also been a four-year journey for senior defensive end Cameron Binkowski, one of the senior leaders on this dominant defense.

Binkowski will play for Army at West Point in 2025. He says that the entire team is hungry for the crown.

“There’s something about this team,” said Binkowski. “We’re young and we’re excited to get out there. It’s probably the most excited I’ve been for a team in these last four years.”

Cole Woodson is another talented member of this Battlefield defense. The senior safety is committed to play for Pitt next year, and shares Binkowski’s sentiment.

“We’re a little young, but we all have commonalities,” said Woodson. “It helps us come together and play better as a team.”

The two Division I prospects set the tone on the defensive side of the ball, but senior receiver Bryce Banning will be a player to watch when the Bobcats are marching down the field.

His parting words set the tone for where Battlefield High School sees themselves this year:

“Don’t be surprised when you see us in States.”

Battlefield’s first step towards the state title is on August 29, where they’ll face the Hylton Bulldogs.
