One of the hardest parts of giving up drink for some people is the taste or satisfaction of an ice cold whatever after a long day of work. PICK A PET: Rosie, Baby and Myrtle
Baby is looking for someone to love her not just for her looks, but for who she is as well. If you want a quiet companion who just loves to be near her person, Baby is your girl! When she comes up to you, Baby enjoys soft pets. That being said, Baby is a bit shy at first, but if you are patient and give her the time that she needs she is sure to warm up. Baby is 9 years old, so the shelter staff would love her to find a comfortable home that she deserves, as the shelter life can be difficult for older cats. Baby has been spayed, dewormed, and flea treated and also is up to date with all of her vaccinations. This week we are featuring an adult cat, but the Humane Society of Rome is currently celebrating Kitten Madness, and is holding a special for half-off adoption fees on our kittens. To visit Baby, stop by the Humane Society of Rome, 6247 Lamphear Road, call 315-336-7070 or go to www.humanesocietyrome.com .
Where I Wander – Fascinating Trees
Whereiwander… today is within our woods and meadow. In my last column, which was about Eastern Chipmunks, I wrote about the vast quantities of food that most chipmunks cache for the winter. Among the cached tree seeds noted by Naturalist John Burroughs, by a single chipmunk over a three-day interval, were five quarts of Hickory nuts and two quarts of Chestnuts. Chipmunks that reside on our property will also cache Black Walnuts, Beechnuts, Butternuts, Downy Serviceberries, Oak Acorns, and many other nuts and berries.

Lorenzo State Historic Site’s Garden And Dark Aisle
For centuries, ornamental gardening was a popular upper-class pastime. But by the early 1800s, recreational gardening was fast becoming an integral part of life for all. In keeping with the prevailing idea that the glory of nature should be brought indoors, large homes often featured greenhouses, urban dwellings installed window boxes, and floral and plant motifs were popular for interior decorating.
