East Union makes new purchases for next year
AFTON - July 1 marked the beginning of a new fiscal year for East Union, and with the first school board meeting of the year came a bundle of new purchases. Monday’s regular school board meeting gave the approval of three new vans for the East Union fleet. Two of these are 12 passenger vans to be used for the primary use as activities transportation as well as special education transportation. The other is a van with a rear lift, used for transporting students with a wheelchair.
100th Union County Fair begins Thursday
The 100th version of the Union County Fair begins Thursday at the fairgrounds in Afton with a blend of traditional events and those recognizing the century mark for the event. At 6 p.m. Thursday will be a a Royal Reunion; a recognition of all former Union County Fair Queens at The Queen Coronation. After the event, live music will be from Tyler Folkerts at The Grand Pavilion.
Twin Cedars vs. Wayne PPD To Today
The forecast for severe weather in the Corydon area pushed the Twin Cedars and Wayne Class 1A regional final game back to today. The Sabers will play for a trip to the state tournament for the third straight season. Top seed Wayne, a team that the Sabers know all too well, is the opponent. The Falcons have mostly dominated the series during the Bound Era, winning 14 of the 17 games played. The last Sabers win was during the 2022 State Championship season when Twin Cedars won 3-2. The two played in each other’s season openers and Wayne won two/nothing. First pitch from Wayne is at 7:00, the winner gets a trip to the class one-A State Tournament in Fort Dodge.
City looks to avoid softball field problems
The Mount Ayr city council discussed the future of adult slow pitch at their regular meeting Monday, July 15. Colton Bolles and Korey Beaman were in attendance to discuss the possibility of using the ball fields at Judge Lewis Park for another adult slow pitch season. City Administrator Brent Wise had asked for a representative to come and explain how they would handle the league this summer.

PCM Softball Defeats Clarke in Regional Semifinals
The PCM softball team defeated Clarke 1-0 in the Class 3A Region 2 semifinals on Saturday night. The #8 ranked Mustangs outlasted the Indians in a fierce pitching battle with both teams trying to keep their seasons alive. Rylee Parsons was the starting pitcher for PCM pitching four innings only giving up one hit while Camden Webb pitched three innings giving up three hits. Tori Lindsay had the lone run in the contest for the Mustangs. PCM Coach Shaun Hudnut said his team played great defense all around.
