DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur School District superintendent is optimistic about the district’s new cell phone ban , but she also knows it will come with a new set of challenges.

In mid-July, the Decatur School Board voted to ban cell phones and other electronic devices as a part of the new Electronic Devices policy for all students during the school day. Students will have to keep their phones, earbuds, and smartwatches in their lockers, or turn them off and place them in a designated spot in their classroom during the school day.

The district encourages students to leave their electronics at home.

Rochelle Clark, the superintendent, said she is focusing the next few weeks on communication, and spreading the message to parents and caregivers. She wants to explain the process before school starts in August.

So far, she has called community members to explain the new rules. If you haven’t received a call yet, you can expect one before the first day of school on August 12. Dr. Clark will also post a video on social media, and personally talk to some students herself.

There will also be banners and posters to assist in the transition.

“My goal is for them to speak differently,” Dr. Clark said. “Start connecting face-to-face. Start explaining themselves on paper more versus using the cell phone terminology.”

She also hopes this helps with academic gains. Often, she has observed students using electronics during lesson time. Dr. Clark knows that is not productive, and hopes this policy makes a difference.

“We are trying to increase academic achievement, and the way to do make sure we are focused,” she explained.

WCIA asked Dr. Clark about parent/guardian response so far. She said only a couple of community members have questioned what the district will do in case of an emergency.

“It’s just simple. You call the front office and they will get a hold of your child,” Dr. Clark explained.

If there is a problem connecting with the school, they can also call the Keil Administration Building.

If students do not follow the new rules and take out their phones when they are not allowed, they’ll get a warning. Parents and/or guardians will be called it it happens again.
