The occupants of a Cessna aircraft that crashed in a backyard in DeLand causing minor injuries last week were identified Tuesday by the sheriff's office.

The pilot was Roberto Isaias Chang Mera, 30, of Daytona Beach, and his passenger was Norman Antonio Borge Carcamo, 42, of Coral Springs, according to a sheriff's office incident report.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the airplane manufactured in 1974 crashed in the backyard of 122 Lake Molly Ave. in DeLand.

Although Volusia County sheriff's deputies initially said both men had serious injuries, a preliminary report from the FAA Tuesday showed the men suffered minor injuries.

According to the sheriff's report, deputies responding to the 3 p.m. crash found both Mera and Carcamo had been pulled out of the airplane and were being treated by medical personnel. The men were not able to tell what happened, the report said.

A witness told deputies that he was working nearby when he heard the airplane flying above and then saw it spiral downward.

The airplane ended up with its nose in the ground.
