    Good morning, Delaware food lovers.

It's already back-to-school time for many students. Summer isn't quite in the rearview mirror but it feels that way.

The Burrows family, the owners of Sambo's Tavern, the iconic, seasonal crab house in Leipsic, told their customers that they were closing early this year due to a family member's illness. The crab house usually stays open until October.

In an Aug. 21 post on social media l ast week, they wrote:

"To our valued customers, family, and friends, we have decided to close early for the season effective immediately. Your understanding is greatly appreciated. We couldn't do what we love without your support. Stay safe and have a wonderful winter, and we look forward to seeing you in the spring!

Love, Ike, Elva, Todd and family"

The family posted on Aug. 26 that Elva Burrows is feeling better and Sambo's expects to reopen on April 2, 2025. Here is our list of local crab houses to visit.

    Another seasonal closing

Get in your ice cream eating now. Dairy Palace, the landmark ice cream takeout off Basin Road in New Castle, announced that it is closing for the season on Sunday, Oct. 6. It's not as far away as you think. In the meantime, the shop that's been serving ice cream since 1956, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

    Tacos, tacos, taco

Roja & Verde Taqueria in Newark will host a back-to-school block party on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. at 60 N. College Ave.

The party is a family-friendly community event and will be held in the parking lot beside the building. Roja & Verde Taqueria is a mostly takeout restaurant offering Mexican street food like tacos, taquitos, tamales and more. The party is a fundraiser for the UDance Dance Marathon , a University of Delaware organization dedicated to supporting the B+ Foundation. Beer and wine proceeds will support Sean’s House & SL24: UnLocke the Night. Festivities include live music, ice cream, and a taco-eating contest. Admission is free.

Mark your calendars for the Delaware Taco Festival from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29 at the Wilmington Riverfront Par. Early Bird Tickets can be purchased here: https://bit.ly/3yqwU7q

    What else is happening

🍝 Bardea owners are opening another new restaurant in downtown Wilmington! Our own Ryan Cormier got the scoop that Scott Stein and Antimo DiMeo of Bardea Food & Drink, Barden Steak, and Bardea Garden are taking over the recently closed Stitch House Brewery on Market Street. Wowsa. More details here . The Bardea guys already are adding a coming-soon eatery in DE.CO Food Hall to the two stalls they currently run there.

🥤 So how did those Charcoal Pit milkshakes travel 752 miles to Chicago without melting? ICYMI, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were handed Charcoal Pit hand-dipped, triple thick milkshakes after the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19. It was captured on video and posted on Biden's social media sites.

We called the Concord Pike restaurant, operating since 1956, to get the lowdown. Did they pack the milkshakes on dry ice or do something special to keep the ice cream drinks nearly frozen until after the President gave his farewell speech and tossed his support toward Harris? Here's the thing: The Pit's team told us they didn't know about the takeout shakes going to The President and Harris until they were tagged in social media posts. So who bought the shakes and how did they keep them cold? It's a Delaware mystery. President Biden and first lady Jill Biden are at their Rehoboth Beach now and according to The White House will remain there throughout the week.

📝 Have you scanned the Delaware Online restaurant inspection database ? It's updated every 24 hours and lists recent inspections and current violations as they are reported. Delaware has more than 3,500 food establishments — not just restaurants but anywhere from bakeries to church kitchens to school cafeterias that prepare food — inspected twice a year.
