Blind horse rescued by Poudre Fire Authority

DENVER (KDVR) — A blind horse was rescued from a canal by the Poudre Fire Authority on Saturday morning.

The horse, a female in her 20s named Lacy, was stuck up to her shoulders in moderately flowing water near the intersection of North Giddings Road and East County Road 56.

Responders, including the PFA’s Large Animal Rescue Team, were sent around 9:52 a.m.

A trained firefighter entered the canal to be with the horse and begin the rescue.

He was able to put a harness on the horse to make sure they would not be separated and in order to guide her to safety.

Lacy was already tired, PFA said, so a winch system was ultimately used to pull her up the bank and to shore.

A medical team immediately checked her vitals and began giving care.

She was able to stand once the mild sedation she was given wore off. She had several cuts to her leg, PFA said.

“But [she] seemed to quickly put the rescue behind her with the help of some fresh hay and loving strokes,” PFA said.
