Ten years after 9/11, the war in Afghanistan continues, sustained by dedicated citizen soldiers. Two Des Moines Register journalists spend three weeks embedded with a 2,800-member Iowa National Guard unit, the largest deployment of Iowa troops since World War II. Their coverage continues a Register tradition that when Iowans go to war, the Register goes, too. On May 1, 2011, the Register publishes a special section of Tony Leys' reporting and Rodney White's photographs from that journey. Online content includes a video of the Iowa troops engaged in a firefight.

Each day this month, as the Register marks its 175 th birthday, we’re sharing front pages from noteworthy moments in history.
