The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that killed a woman just north of Des Moines on Wednesday morning.

Deputies were dispatched to the 4300 block of Northwest Second Street for a report regarding a person that was struck by a car at around 5:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators believe the vehicle was traveling southbound at the time of the crash, the news release said. The unidentified woman died at the scene. No information was given about the driver.

No names have been released as deputies work to identify the woman and notify her family.

Sheriff’s office officials are asking the public to avoid Northwest Second Street through Northwest 44th Street, the news release said.

The crash is still under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.

This is the second pedestrian that has been struck and killed in the 4300 block of Northwest Second Street this year. On Jan. 29, a 41-year-old man identified as Joshua Scott Laird was struck by a car while walking in the southbound lanes of Northwest Second Street.

Witnesses said the area was not well-lit and Laird was wearing dark clothing when the crash happened around 8:15 p.m.
