Seattle Launches SUN Bucks Program to Provide $120 Grocery Benefits for Children During Summer
Seattle families with young children have a new reason to look forward to the summer, with the introduction of SUN Bucks, a program providing $120 in grocery benefits per eligible child, which can be used at participating stores and farmers markets. This financial boost for groceries comes in addition to free nutritious meals offered to children and youth at over 60 locations throughout the city, a service managed by Seattle Human Services Department's Summer Food Service Program. In a bid to tackle food insecurity during the summer months, when school-provided meals cease, the city has organized a program celebration at Jefferson Park on July 12, according to the Human Services blog.
Woodland Park Zoo has a new baby boy gorilla
It has yet to be named, but Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo is abuzz with excitement over its new baby gorilla resident. “The average weight for a gorilla at birth is 4 pounds, and we’re pleased to report our new boy weighs 4.4 pounds," said Dr. Yousuf Jafarey, Associate Veterinarian at Woodland Park Zoo. "His vital signs are good, and he is healthy and physically normal."

Rescued Kinkajou in 'fair health' after wellness exam at Point Defiance Zoo
TACOMA, Wash. — Officials said the young kinkajou recently found at a Yakima rest stop is healthy after undergoing a wellness exam. The kinkajou was rescued by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police. He was then taken to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma to be examined while staff worked to find a safe place for him.
