As the Pistons continue their rebuild, Pelicans assistant head coach James Borrego won't be a part of it.

Earlier reported to be a contender for the job, Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes reported on Friday that the former Hornets head coach has withdrawn from consideration for Detroit's opening.

First-year president of basketball operations Trajan Langston worked with Borrego in New Orleans in 2023-24. Earlier this month, he fired former Pistons head coach Monty Williams, who had five years and $65 million remaining on his contract signed last May.

In his lone season as Pistons head coach, Williams, the 2021-22 NBA Coach of the Year, went 14-68.

Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Detroit's 74-244 record is the league's worst. The Pistons are also the only team without at least 100 wins during that span, per Stathead .

After Borrego's decision was revealed, fans shared the same sentiment: Who could blame him?

"Don't blame him," wrote one commenter.

Others shared similar opinions. Here are a few:

"He said hell nah I'm not going to the Pistons."

"Took one look at that situation and said 'nah.'"

"I don’t even blame him. It’s a dumpster fire over there."

"He said 'on second thought, fk that.'"

"He saw their moves and said hell no."

The Pistons added former G League Ignite small forward Ron Holland II with the No. 5 overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, a move ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony described as "the first surprising pick of the night."

On Friday, Detroit traded young wing Quentin Grimes, 24, to the Mavericks for guard Tim Hardaway Jr., 32, and three second-round picks, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski .

Detroit hasn't made the playoffs since the 2018-19 season and hasn't won a playoff series since 2008.
