A Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Amsterdam had to make an unexpected stop in New York after passengers were served spoiled food, airline officials said.

Delta Flight 136 left Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport about 11 p.m. Tuesday and landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City at 4 a.m. “after reports that a portion of the Main Cabin in-flight meal service were spoiled,” CNN reports.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels,”  Delta told CNN in a statement.

The Airbus A330 aircraft was carrying 277 passengers. They were offered hotel rooms and have been booked on other flights, according to Delta.

HuffPost has reached out to Delta Air Lines for comment.

It is unclear how many of the flight’s passengers ate the spoiled food, but the Fire Department of the City of New York said emergency medical responders treated 12 passengers, according to NBC News.

Delta said that the incident is under investigation and that the airline’s food safety team is working to “immediately isolate the product,” according to CNN.
