Former Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager made history on Thursday as he became the first left-handed hitting shortstop to hit 200 home runs. The statistic only includes players who played at least 50 percent of their games at shortstop.

Seager has hit 96 home runs over the last three seasons in Texas. From 2015-21 in Los Angeles, he hit 104, topping out at 26 in 2016.

Seager hit the record-breaking home run during a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The home run was good for Seager’s 30th of the season. The 30-year-old has slashed .277/.354/.513 with 30 home runs and 74 RBIs on the season. He ranks ninth in MLB in home runs this season, and second among shortstops behind Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson.

Seager originally began his career with the Dodgers as the team’s first-round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. He excelled in the Dodgers’ minor leagues, making the All-Star team and winning a California League MVP award before making his MLB debut toward the end of the 2015 season.

It didn’t take long for Seager to become one of the team’s best players. In 2016, he hit .308 with 26 home runs and 72 RBIs to become an All-Star, the National League Rookie of the Year, and a Silver Slugger. Talk about a start. He would make the All-Star team and become named a Silver Slugger once again in 2017.

Seager was limited due to a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery during the 2018 season, but returned to play most of the 2019 season. The following season, Seager was a critical part of the Dodgers’ World Series-winning team in 2020, hitting .317 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs across 52 regular season games. During the postseason, Seager was crowned NLCS MVP, as well as the World Series MVP.

Seager spent just one more season with the Dodgers in 2021 before departing for the Rangers in free agency, earning a 10-year, $325 million contract. He would go on to win a World Series with the Rangers and another World Series MVP award in 2023. He also finished second in American League MVP voting behind then-Angel Shohei Ohtani, and made his lone All-MLB First Team.
