The History of Mississippi’s Moon Trees
Ourmshome.com – Rebecca Turner – 2024-07-19 12:17:03. SUMMARY: Moon trees are grown from seeds that have traveled to or orbited the moon. Mississippi hosts at least three such trees in Starkville and Cleveland, fostering educational opportunities. The seeds first orbited the moon during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. After returning, the Forest Service germinated the seeds, planting them globally. In 1975, astronaut Stuart Roosa planted a sycamore at Mississippi State University, known as the “moon sycamore.” Delta State University also received a moon tree seedling. Additionally, Bayou Academy in Cleveland got a sweetgum tree from the Orion spacecraft in 2022. These trees confirm seeds can grow normally after exposure to microgravity.
Cleveland gets a splash of color with new museum mural
The City of Cleveland is proud of the recently-completed mural on the exterior wall of the Cleveland Historical Museum, located at 203 E Boothe St. This vibrant masterpiece, painted by celebrated artist Cherry Meekins of Meek Cherry Artistry, is the fourth mural in the city created by Meekins, whose work has become a defining element of Cleveland’s artistic landscape.
DMI receives Mississippi Arts Commission grant
The Delta Music Institute at Delta State University has been awarded a $4,250 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the more than $1.7 million in grants MAC awarded in Fiscal Year 2025 and will be used to fund the annual DMI Summer Camp, a five-day interactive experience for high school students ages 15-18 exploring three entertainment industry career tracks.
