MUNISING — Cross country season is underway as the Menominee and Stephenson High School teams competed at the annual Larissa Vartti Invite at Valley Spur on Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles cruised to first place with a collective score of 89, while the Menominee girls came in fourth place with a 109.

Faith Cappaert set the tone for the Stephenson girls with a third-place time of 22:22, setting a new personal course record in the process.

Meanwhile, Gabi Putnam ran her own course PR in 25:35, putting her in 15th place. Maddie Vista wasn’t far behind, with her time of 26:55 placing the senior in 16th place.

Rounding out the day for the Lady Eagles was freshman Adrian Anderson, who took home a varsity medal in her first cross country race with a time of 27:46.

For the Menominee girls, Winley Brandt was the pacesetter after running the course in 22:44, good for fifth overall.

Kaelyn Doubek backed up Brandt with an 18th-place time of 27:27, with Lilliana Revall right behind her in 19th place with a time of 27:43.

Eden Allen wrapped up the action for the Lady Maroons with a 32nd-place time of 40:39.

On the boys’ side, the Maroons’ Ethan Howarth, placed 32nd overall with a time of 23:57. With Menominee’s other three runners engaged in prior commitments, the Maroons finished dead last in the team standings at 11th overall with 222.

“We only had one boy run for us today. The others had NWTC class and one was on a family vacation. We will have at least four varsity boys,” Menominee coach Brenda Brandt said.

Stephenson’s Canon Kuntze turned in the fastest time for the Eagles after crossing the finish line in 18:19, good for third overall, which was also a new personal course record for the senior.

Also setting a new course personal-best was Trevor Verba, who gave Stephenson a pair of top-20 finishers after completing his run in 20:26, putting him in 14th place.

Competing in his first cross country event, Chase Monette dashed his way to 31st place with a time of 23:42.

Luke Olson recorded a 36th-place time of 24:56, while August Berger took 40th place after posting a time of 28:03, while Lyle Revall (28:34) was hot on his heels in 41st place.

The Stephenson boys took fourth place in the team standings with a score of 124. Munising dashed its way to victory with a score of 52, well ahead of second-place Engadine (89)

“It was a perfect day for a cross country meet and I thought everybody ran really strong, from our veteran runners setting great examples to our newcomers performing confidently and overcoming any nerves,” Stephenson coach Kate Kuntze said.
