PennDOT plans safety improvement at 54/642 intersection
Danville, Pa. — A big safety project is coming to a tough intersection. PennDOT is planning to start later this year on an extensive rebuilding of the Route 54/Route 642 intersection in Valley Township, Montour County. The rebuilding and reconfiguration followed a large number of injuries and fatal crashes. The intersection is two interchanges, the Route 642 west lanes, or Liberty Valley Road, and Route 642 east, locally known as Jerseytown Road. PennDOT says they’ll relocate the "Park and Ride" lot, move a section of Route 642, and add new traffic signals. They’ll add left turn lanes, replace a bridge, add lighting, and make other safety improvements. PennDOT has a video of the project on their District 3 website, they’ll start work this winter, and hope to have work completed in four years.
Northumberland County recognize area Veterans with resolution
Sunbury, Pa. — The month of July will now be known as Veterans and Armed Services Month in Northumberland County, the Northumberland County Commissioners announced this week. The resolution recognizes the service and sacrifice of the Veterans in the U.S. armed forces. Northumberland County Commissioner Sam Schicchitano shared how the idea came about: “A veterans and armed services month, not a veterans day, not 4th of July day, we need to start with the people who really mean something…but who got us here and who are the ones, that all those other things that they do, they can do now because of our veteran and our people in (armed services).” At the meeting, over a dozen Veterans got an in-person thanks from the commissioners. Also at the meeting, $9,000 was donated for county veterans services—the money was raised by the Sunbury Airport Campground annual poker run.
