School bus cuts drawing attention to Hammond's pedestrian infrastructure
Sharp cuts to school buses may put more pressure on Hammond's sidewalks. During Wednesday's Mayor's Night Out event at Edison Elementary School, residents pointed out that a few surrounding streets lack sidewalks for students who now have to walk to school. Others noted that some parts of the city see large numbers of student walkers, but few signs to warn motorists at busy intersections.

It’s that time of the year again: Students, alumni, and parents flood the stands of the football field, anticipation steadily building, as the stresses of the week are let go. As the sun begins to set, the towering floodlights take over and illuminate the field. It’s just mere minutes until kickoff. Pep-talks and last-minute preparations are happening in the locker rooms. The student sections and the cheer teams are ready to support their schools, chants carrying across the field. Then it happens: Both teams storm onto the field, taking their places on the sidelines. The referee’s whistle shrieks, and the Friday Night Lights are on.

Ms. Scartozzi is one of many new teachers here at Griffith and teaches math for middle school. Scartozzi taught 8th grade at 21st Century Charter School before coming to Griffith. Several area schools adjusting schedule due to extreme heat
The heat wave is having an impact on some schools in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana. Banneker Elementary in the Miller Beach section of Gary has canceled classes. Lyons Township High School is also on an early dismissal.

Nicholas Sanchez, previously a student at Hobart High School, is one of the many new teachers that came to Griffith High School this year! His journey had only just begun once he graduated from Valparaiso University. During college, he was still trying to figure out what he wanted to teach! He had previously considered teaching Spanish, French, or Music before finding out what his favorite subject to teach was. After graduating, he became a student teacher for Mrs. Hernandez (the band teacher). Once he was student teaching for a bit, he decided to stick with teaching music.

On August 17, Wheeler High School (WHS)’s Cross Country team debuted its first season by hosting the annual Bearcat Invite. Due to the construction of new sports fields on campus, the race was held at the Gabis Arboretum at Purdue University Northwest. Boys Varsity Soccer lose to Munster in the last minutes 2-1
Lowell boys soccer lost a heartbraker on Wednesday night, leading Munster for most of the game. The back line of the Red Devils repelled attack after attack of direct play and long attacks: Riley Hirjak, Trevor Redmerski, Collin Cessna, and James Fitzpatrick. The team was also bouyed by many great saves from Josh Meadows in goal.
