Infant dies after being pulled from hot car in North Jersey, police say

A 6-month-old girl died after she was left alone in a parked vehicle in East Hanover, prosecutors said, as heat and high temperatures soared Wednesday afternoon.

East Hanover police responded to a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. to a parking lot in the area of South Ridgedale Avenue at Route 10 and found the infant in a parked vehicle, according to a statement from the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the child, but the girl died at a nearby hospital, the office said. The child's mother was also treated.

The infant appears to have been left unattended in the vehicle prior to her death, the office said, citing a preliminary investigation. Officials did not say how long the girl was left alone.

The cause and manner of the child's death is pending and an investigation remains active, the office said.

Temperatures swelled into the mid- to upper-90s across North Jersey for much of the week as the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory across the region.
