Union sues Philadelphia over requirement that city workers return to the office full time
A union that represents thousands of Philadelphia city employees asked a judge Tuesday to block Mayor Cherelle Parker’s requirement that they return to their offices full time as of July 15. The lawsuit, filed by District Council 47 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, claims the mandate violates its contract and will harm city workers. The union, which represents 6,000 administrative and supervisory employees, also filed an unfair-practices complaint with the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board.Parker announced the mandate in May, saying she wanted to create a more visible and accessible government. Bridge connecting Folcroft to Darby Twp. reopens after two-year closure
After being closed for two years and resulting in traffic detours, repairs and construction, the Tribbett Ave. Bridge – or “County Bridge #237” – has re-opened. County and Darby Township officials, PennDOT representatives, engineers, residents, and U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-5) came together Monday morning (July 1) to celebrate the event with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. The bridge lies over Hermesprota Creek, between S. Clifton St. and Kaiser Drive, and connects Folcroft Borough and Darby Township. Deemed “in poor condition” several years ago, it was torn down and remodeled through the partnering of project design firm McCormick Taylor, and construction inspection firm, Traffic Planning and Design, overseen by PennDOT.
