Springfield man admits to buying $30k worth of stamps in NY with fake checks
A Springfield man pleaded guilty to using fake checks at several Central New York post offices to buy $30,000 in stamps, New York state prosecutors said in court filings. William Soto, 32, of Springfield, was charged with 12 counts of theft of government property, according to U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman’s Office for the Northern District of New York. Soto was indicted in March.

Syracuse women’s lacrosse picks up transfer from Rochester area
Syracuse, N.Y. —The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team has picked up a transfer from the Rochester area. Ava Peers of Fairport, N.Y., who spent her freshman season at the University of Louisville as a midfielder, will transfer to Syracuse for the 2025 season. Peers’ high school coach, Mara Karpp, confirmed the transfer to syracuse.com.

In Memoriam: Life Trustee H. John Riley Jr. ’61
On his journey from his first job in a corporate mailroom to the executive suite, H. John Riley Jr. ’61 often credited the education and opportunities he received at Syracuse University for his success. His gratitude shaped his approach to both service and philanthropy at his alma mater. Riley was still serving as a life trustee and co-chair of the Forever Orange Campaign and its $1.5 billion goal when he passed away on June 1, 2024, at the age of 83.
Whitman School Names Inaugural Albert and Betty Hill Professor
The Martin J. Whitman School of Management has recently named Professor Natarajan Balasubramanian the inaugural Albert & Betty Hill Professor, effective July 1. With a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, Balasubramanian joined the Whitman School in 2009. His research focuses on understanding economic value creation by new and existing firms, using large-scale data to uncover generalizable facts and how competition, innovation and learning affect the entry and performance of firms. Balasubramanian’s teaching includes areas of strategic management, firm performance, technological change and industry evolution to undergraduate and graduate students at the Whitman School.
Clemson lacrosse flips another 5-star recruit from Syracuse, midfielder Aubrie Eisfeld
After flipping the commitment of the No. 1 player in the 2025 class, Alexa Spallina, from Syracuse to Clemson, the Tigers have flipped another 5-star recruit from the Orange. Eisfeld is currently the No. 6 overall player in the class, making this already stacked Clemson recruiting class that much more stacked. Head coach Allison Kwolek has been on fire lately recruiting, with the program trending in the right direction. As reported by Inside Lacrosse, Eisfeld initially committed to Kayla Treanor and the Syracuse Orange on September 19. Hailing from Bayport-Blue Point High School in New York, Eisfeld is a talented midfielder. She plays club lacrosse for the Long Island Yellow Jackets 2025 Spallina team alongside fellow standout player Alexa Spallina.
