Case continues against man charged with bouncing check for livestock

EAU CLAIRE — A hearing in a case involving a bad check used to purchase sheep and goats was on the docket for Monday, but court records don’t say whether it happened and the defendant has a history of failing to show up.

Jordan Leisgang, 27, Seymour, is charged with theft of movable property with a value of between $10,000 and $100,000 and issuing a worthless check. The case was filed in September 2023, and missed hearings have been a hallmark of the proceedings.

Leisgang’s initial appearance was scheduled for Oct. 25, 2023. He missed it, leading to a warrant being issued for his arrest. The court quashed the warrant the following January at prosecutors’ request and his initial appearance was rescheduled for Jan. 31.

    Leisgang missed it, too.

The initial hearing was finally held in February, when Leisgang made his appearance by video from the Eau Claire County Jail. The court set a $2,500 signature bond for his release. He showed up for his March hearing, at which he told the court he was working on getting an attorney.

Then he missed the followup hearing in April. Another warrant was issued and this time the cash bond was set at $25,000. In June he appeared in court by video again, this time from the Outagamie County Jail.

According to the criminal complaint, Leisgang sold the sheep and goats, but told the purchaser he would be interested in buying them back once they were ready for slaughter. The two agreed on the buyback and, when the time came in November 2022, Leisgang wrote a check for $18,560.

The check bounced, and the seller’s efforts to get Leisgang to pay the outstanding charges failed. Investigators found that at the end of November the account, which was in the names of Leisgang and Jordan Leisgang Livestock, had a balance of -$17,900. It was eventually closed due to the negative balance.

Wisconsin’s online court database shows a hearing was scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, but no updates have been filed. That leaves the current status of the case unclear.
