Caledonia Community Ed/Eitzen Lions T-ball & Peewee Academy in full swing this summer

It's been a summer full of laughs and tears and sweat for these T-ballers but they give it everything they've got and the Academy is proud of them.

T-ball has had some fun games of dirt being thrown, tackling each other on ground balls, swinging and waving to their parents as they run to first or when they score a run.

The PeeWees games in Eitzen have been filled with big moments that only a storybook ending could create, but these endings have happened in reality in Eitzen on Tuesday and Friday nights.

The first game of the season saw Mary Schieber hitting a walk off single scoring Rylan Schmitz for the Gray team beating Maroon 20-19.

Red beat White 26-13 and Lane Hoscheit hit the Academy's first home run of the year with a big solo shot in the 2nd inning. Max Merchlewitz paced the Red team going 3-3 with a double and 2 singles.

During the June 25 games, we saw the first ever five-inning peewees game. We played two extra innings as most games are three innings, and in the Academy we don't believe in tie games.

In the bottom of the fifth — with the bases loaded and the crowd roaring — Blue was down 25-24 with Karver Meiners at the plate. With one mighty swing of the bat, Meiners hits a towering game winning grand slam to send the Blue team home with a victory. This was and could be one of the biggest moments in PeeWee Academy history — although, stay tuned, because in another game something else incredible happened.

There has also been some sparkling defensive web gems this season by Jayden Snodgrass, Jackson Stemper, Ashtyn and Layne Meyer, Harlow Burmester, Nora Stutzmann, Mary Schieber, Levynn Goetzinger, Avery Lietzau, Brevynn Tessmer, Gabriel Palm, Ivy Wiebke, Jaxson Klug, Rowan (Hotdish) Fisch and Brooks Boler. Seeing some of these plays these Academy kids can make is truly something to see.

In the July 16 game, Gold battled White and saw Jaxson Klug hit a big three-run home run to beat White 24-19. Ivy Wiebke was 3-3 in the game with two doubles and a single.

Another one of the craziest endings to an Academy game was Blue vs. Yellow on July 16 when Karver Meiners had a chance to play the hero once again—with his team down 22-21 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third.

But Levi Sauer had a different idea. Karver steps up and drills a line drive to first, and Levi Sauer makes one of the best catches this Academy has seen, a snow cone type catch in front of the fence to win the game for the Yellow team 22-21.

The crowd went crazy on this play, and both teams showed great sportsmanship after the game.

During this season so far we've had two young superstars have a game where multiple home runs were hit. Will Goetzinger and Tanner Schulte each have had one game with two homers in a game.

This year the Academy kids have hit a combined 22 home runs this season and that number will continue to climb.

With the regular season winding down next week, the playoffs and championship week are right around the corner.

If you have Tuesday nights free, take the short drive down to Eitzen and experience the grandeur of the Eitzen ball field and what these Peewee Academy kids do as they battle for the Peewees Championship and the first-place medals.

As the Academy motto goes: "I am strong, I am important, I am loved. Peewee's on 3 … 1,2,3 PEEWEES."
